RICHMOND, Va. -- Look at London Fletchers career stats, particularly the column of numbers under the letter "G." Nothing but 16s for "Games" played. On and on and on. Through four years with the St. Louis Rams. Five with the Buffalo Bills. Six with the Washington Redskins. Its become routine to say that Fletcher has never missed a game in his NFL career. Its routine to hear him say that hes been "blessed" with "good genes." Its routine to hear him insist that he only thinks about his playing streak when reporters bring it up. And, every year that passes, the routine becomes more remarkable. Robert Griffin III has missed a game, and hes only played one season. Keenan Robinson, the 2012 draft pick groomed as a possible successor to Fletcher, has already missed five games and had two serious shoulder injuries. He might not play at all this season. Fletchers streak is now at 240, the longest among active players in the NFL. Hes been credited with 1,321 tackles and 608 assists, which translates into nearly 2,000 confrontations with running backs, tight ends and quarterbacks -- and not a single impact that caused him to miss the next game. "London," Griffin said, "has been amazing." Fletcher is now 38, back for another year captaining the Redskins defence as an inside linebacker. It wasnt a sure thing that he would make it back this time. There were times last year when he couldnt practice because of injuries. Then he kept silent for a while after the end of the season and waited until he had ankle and elbow surgeries to proclaim that, no, he never seriously considered retirement. "Its just something where you get up every day and go to work and dont think about it," Fletcher said. "Its pretty much how I go about my business. I get up every day, come to work and dont think about the durability part until somebody brings it up. I feel good. I try to do a lot of different things to keep myself feeling good. The training staff does a great job of working with me, and the coaches do a great job of monitoring my reps and things like that. So I dont think about it a whole lot." Besides, now is not the time to quit. The Redskins went 32-48 in Fletchers first five seasons in Washington, and the losing was starting to wear on him. Now they are the reigning NFC East champs. They are on the rise with Griffin, whose own medical marvel is the speed in which hes returned from reconstructive knee surgery. "Well, if I was impressed with him before (last) season, how do you think I feel about him now?" Fletcher said with a laugh. "I think he exceeded all expectations, and thats really hard for a guy like him to come in with such high expectations. And when you think about it, this franchise has been looking for a franchise quarterback for, I dont know, over 20 years. So to finally get one ..." Fletcher is two-plus seasons away from the record for consecutive games played by a defensive player, Jim Marshalls 282-game run from 1960-79. Hes in the last year of his latest contract, but thats immaterial. As long as he keeps playing well -- hes been second-team All-Pro the last two years -- the Redskins will want him back. "Really, in the National Football League, you are always on your last year of your contract for the most part," Fletcher said. "This is just the nature of the business. I have scratched and clawed my whole career. I came in as an undrafted free agent, so I was on the last year of my contract 16 years ago when you really think about it. Its not something I spend a lot of time with. Im focused on this season and thats pretty much it." Notes: Griffin was a bystander for nearly the entire practice Tuesday as the team prepared for Thursday nights preseason opener against the Tennessee Titans. There were no 7-on-7 drills, and coaches arent letting Griffin do 11-on-11 drills because of his knee. Kirk Cousins will start at quarterback against the Titans and play about 15 plays. ... Running backs coach Bobby Turner, who is also an assistant head coach, ran the practice because head coach Mike Shanahan was away attending a friends funeral. Turner refused to take questions from reporters after practice. Asked why he wasnt answering questions, he said: "Because Im just filling in." ... Heavy rains forced the Redskins indoors for the first time at training camp: The morning walkthrough was held at Richmonds convention centre. Wholesale Nike Shoes For Sale . PETERSBURG, Fla. But now that hes in the NHL, the Calgary Flames centre showed big improvement in that department by scoring the winner in the eighth round of a 5-4 shootout victory over the Winnipeg Jets on Monday. (STATS) -- With the three top-scoring teams in the subdivision still alive, there figures to be plenty of points in the FCS playoffs this weekend. At Stambaugh Stadium, there should be plenty of punts. Two of the nations best defenses will have a lot to say about which of the subdivisions unseeded Cinderellas books a spot in the semifinals as Wofford visits Youngstown State on Saturday.Sam Houston State, James Madison and Eastern Washington should keep scoreboards busy in the FCS quarterfinals, with the over/under for Friday nights Bearkats-Dukes showdown set at 84 1/2 in a matchup between the nations two highest-scoring teams.Thats a cool 51 points more than Vegas expects in Youngstown, where two teams that werent supposed to get this far will try to become the FCS final fours unlikeliest party crasher. Nineteenth-ranked Wofford (10-3) is third in the subdivision in scoring defense at 16.1 points per game, while the No. 13 Penguins (10-3) are just a tick behind at 17.7.The Terriers have allowed a total of 17 in their last three games -- none in the final 52 minutes of their 17-3 round of 16 win at The Citadel and none in their past five fourth quarters.I dont care if its 3-0 or 40-39, Youngstown State coach Bo Pelini said. A wins a win. Theyre hard to come by.They didnt used to be in Youngstown, where the Penguins were the subdivisions most dominant program in the 1990s, but this playoff trip is the programs first since 2006. YSU made it to the semifinals that season and is on the cusp of getting back there after shocking third-seeded Jacksonville State 40-24 last weekend. For as good as theyve been defensively, the Penguins offense has woken up in recent weeks. They threw for a season-high 315 yards against the Gamecocks but still managed to run it in three times, giving Youngstown State a remarkable 15 rushing touchdowns -- along with 47.6 points and 566 yards per game -- over the past three weeks. Quarterback Hunter Wells has come alive after taking over at midseason, averaging 12.87 yards per attempt on 45 throws during this outburst. So whos to say a visit from Wofford will ultimately turn into a grinder in the trenches?I always tell our guys, you dont have a crystal ball, Pelini said. You dont know what its gonna take week to week or how its gonna go.Its still probably safe to say Wofford would prefer a low-possession contest that hinges on getting some defensive stops late. In the last four of their six straight wins, the Terriers have allowed just 5.44 yards per pass attempt with eight interceptions, yielded one touchdown on the ground and stopped 68 ppercent of their opponents third-down attempts.ddddddddddddWofford was sixth in the FCS with 2.9 yards per carry allowed on the ground. Take away Ole Miss and the three games against fellow triple-option offenses, and the Terriers surrender 1.7 yards per tote.Everybody plays for one another, defensive lineman Tyler Vaughn said. Its 11 hats to the ball every time, and we ride together. Thats been our mentality all season.Even in the summer, everybody knew what the situation was. We wanted to be a great defense and we wanted to dictate games and make it known that we were trying to be the best defense in the country.Coach Mike Ayers team may need its defense to be great again, particularly with the uncertainty under center reaching a critical level. Junior quarterback Brandon Goodson, who began the season third on the depth chart, left against The Citadel with an ankle injury, leaving fifth-string true freshman Joseph Newman to take his place.Newman ran 36 yards for the tiebreaking touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Goodson is considered questionable, and if he cant go and Newman gets hurt, running back Nick Colvin is the next signal caller up.Were used to different quarterbacks coming in, offensive lineman Dequan Miller said. Last year, we rotated three guys and then this year we had two guys go down. It was just the next man up. When you come into the game, you play ball.Pelini seems as unfazed with who to expect to be taking snaps as his opponent is.Theyre gonna run their offense, and were preparing for their offense, he said. Whoevers under center is under center. Both Youngstown State and Wofford are unsurprisingly among the FCS leaders in time of possession, and YSUs third-down percentage (46.9) is 12th in the subdivision. Without facing much in the way of the triple option during the regular season, Pelini has had to instill one mantra into his players this week: discipline. For star defensive linemen Avery Moss and Derek Rivers along with the rest of a Penguins defense thats used to getting after the quarterback -- their 44 sacks lead the FBS -- that aggressive mentality will take a back seat for at least this week.Everybodys gotta handle their responsibilities and have their eyes in the right places, Pelini said. You need 11 guys to fit it right and to do their part. ... And youve gotta be physical, because theyre a physical team. The winner faces either Richmond or No. 2 seed Eastern Washington in next weeks semifinals. ' ' '
