CHICAGO -- Casper Wells did not realize how significant his catch was until he turned to look at the Jumbotron after he helped save a victory for the White Sox. Wells robbed Reed Johnson of a home run in the eighth inning to help the Chicago White Sox beat the Atlanta Braves 3-1 on Sunday. With the White Sox leading 3-1, Wells leaped up against the left-field wall to make a spectacular catch and rob Johnson of the game-tying homer. "I didnt know at first, I was just glad I caught it, you know. And then I saw the replay and I was like, wow that, you know, that was really special. I never did anything like that before. So, like I said Im just happy I got to help the team out in that situation and the moment that it happened made it that much more special," said Wells. Initially, Johnson did not think he hit it well enough to get it out of the park. "No, I hit it OK. I knew that the ball was travelling pretty good all weekend, so when I hit it I was kind of begging for it to get up. I didnt crush it, but obviously in that situation theyre probably, I would assume, in the eighth inning hes playing pretty deep almost in no doubles anyway, so that made it a little easier play for him. I hit that ball earlier in the game, its probably a homer because hes probably playing me a lot shallower, you now? So, it was kind of everything," said Johnson. Wells catch was several great defensive plays by the White Sox. Alex Rios added two hits and an RBI for Chicago and Jose Quintana (5-2) scattered nine hits in 5 2-3 innings for the win. White Sox relievers Ramon Troncoso and Donnie Veal each retired the two batters they faced and Nate Jones pitched a scoreless eighth. Closer Addison Reed pitched scoreless ninth for his 25th save in 29 chances. Braves starter Mike Minor (9-5) pitched his first career complete game in2 the loss as the Braves dropped two out of three to the White Sox. Minor allowed three runs, two earned on five hits. He struck out eight and walked two. "That was my first complete game. That was not the way I wanted it to end, but it was a lot better than I thought it was going to end up, because the first inning was I couldnt really feel anything, I was missing a lot of spots," said Minor. The Braves had bases loaded and no outs in the second inning, but failed to score. Dan Uggla struck out and Brian McCann was caught off second base on Reed Johnsons line out. The Braves loaded the bases with two outs in the third inning and could not score again. Second baseman Jeff Keppinger made a diving stop on Brian McCanns ball and threw him out at first. "McCann is a pull hitter. He looks like hes trying to drive everything to right field so I was more likely to go to my left than I was to my right. If he hits that ball to my right, I probably aint getting it. So I was anticipating something to be at me or to my left and I dont know. I just kind of went after it and it happened to fall in my glove," said Keppinger. In the first inning, Adam Dunn beat the defensive shift with a two-out single through the left side of the infield to score Alejandro De Aza. De Aza led off the third with a double and Rios blooped a single with the infield drawn in to score De Aza. Trailing 2-0 in the fifth, Evan Gattis lined a single an off third baseman Brent Morels glove to score Chris Johnson. The White Sox added an insurance run in the sixth inning on Dayan Viciedos sacrifice fly. ST. LOUIS -- Which Jaime Garcia will take the mound Sunday at Busch Stadium? Will it be the one who has been whacked for 11 runs in nine-plus innings of his last two starts, or will it be the one who lasted eight frames in each of his previous two outings? The answer could decide if the St. Louis Cardinals will wrap up their set with the Oakland Athletics on a winning note, or if theyll head for a critical nine-game road trip through the National League Central off a series loss to one of the American Leagues worst teams. The trends point toward a good game for Garcia (10-9, 4.37 ERA). He is 34-21 in 78 career games at home with a 2.87 ERA. Whats more, Oakland (56-73) has lost 16 of the last 20 games when opponents start a left-hander and its 13-21 record against lefty starters is the worst in the AL.But the As were able to flip the script Saturday night in a 3-2 win despite picking up just four hits, spoiling the first major league start of Alex Reyes. They scored their runs on a bases-loaded walk, a fielders choice grounder on which the Cardinals eschewed a sure out in favor of a risky throw to the plate that was late, and a sacrifice fly.Oakland has walked just 327 times in 129 games, but drew five walks, four against Reyes, who lasted just 4 2/3 innings as the As ran his pitch count up to 89.The coaches told us their starting pitcher was pretty wild, left fielder Khris Davis said. So I was looking for the first good pitch tto put a good swing on it.ddddddddddddSt. Louis (68-60) didnt put many good swings together after starting the fourth inning with consecutive singles. Its final 17 hitters went down in order, with perhaps two hard-hit balls total in that span. The result was the Cardinals failed to expand their 1 1/2-game lead on Miami and Pittsburgh for the NLs second wild-card spot. Whats more, the New York Mets pulled within 2 1/2 games with a victory over Philadelphia. We know that we have a good team, St. Louis reliever Matt Bowman said, and that if we can keep winning, everything will take care of itself.St. Louis will again face a pitcher with which its unfamiliar in right-hander Andrew Triggs (0-1, 4.38 ERA). His last outing was Monday night against Cleveland, which he blanked for six innings on just three hits and a walk, fanning six.But Triggs settled for a no-decision when the offense couldnt solve Carlos Carrasco and Oakland eventually lost 1-0.Triggs, who has been promoted and outrighted a whopping eight times this year, is one of three former relievers who have been forced into a starting role due to a spate of injuries that have decimated the rotation. You dont expect that many injuries in your rotation, As manager Bob Melvin said, but guys have been getting opportunities and making the most of them.
