They were never seriously competitive in the NL West and were a nonfactor in our standings as well, finishing with their worst overall mark in five seasons and a string of triple-digit category rankings. If not for pristine Petco Park, things would have been even worse.Whats goodPetco Park, the site of Julys All-Star Game, generated a 34th-place ranking in stadium experience, the best of any category. Improvements in 2016 were the relocation of the franchises six retired numbers, including the No. 19 of icon Tony Gwynn, from atop the batters eye in center field to the home plate plaza. The Padres Hall of Fame opened July 1, with one exhibit looking at the history of baseball in San Diego dating to the late 1800s. That affordability ranking is high, but really, the average ticket price of $23.71 is seven bucks below the MLB average and contributes to a 40th-place bang for the buck ranking, despite a 68-win season. You could ease the pain from the many losses with a 16-ounce beer for just $5.Whats badIt was not only a bad season for GM A.J. Preller but also a humiliating one, as the Padres endured their sixth-straight losing season. A massive spending spree prior to the 2015 campaign backfired, and Preller finally decided to discard some expensive parts, including James Shields, Matt Kemp, Andrew Cashner and Drew Pomeranz. The trade of Pomeranz caught the eye of the commissioners office, which suspended Preller for 30 days for reportedly withholding medical records on players he was dealing. Padres fans might feel that if youre going to cheat, you might as well win while doing so. They rank dead last of all pro teams in title track (122nd), worst in MLB in players (118th) and sixth-worst in baseball in ownership (111th). When fans were asked if their team demonstrated a commitment to winning, only two MLB clubs ranked lower than the Padres.Whats newGiven all the problems this season -- and a 28-place drop in fan relations to 111th overall -- give the Padres credit for coming up with The Links at Petco Park. Last offseason, Callaway Golf and the Padres teamed up to create a nine-hole golf course within the baseball facility, where players hit from the upper deck onto greens in the outfield. It was so popular that it is being brought back this November, with 684 tee times for nearly 2,800 slots over the six-day event. Expect some better swings than we saw from the Padres, who hit for a major-league-low .235 average.Next: Oakland As?| Full rankings Cheap Ray Ban Sunglasses . Ray Ban Black Friday 2019 .Y. -- Leading 3-0 with only 11:25 left, the Colorado Avalanche committed a seemingly meaningless penalty to give the New York Islanders a power play. PHILADELPHIA -- The Carson Wentz Era is now for the Philadelphia Eagles. The No. 2 overall draft pick will start Week 1 against the Cleveland Browns despite missing the final three preseason games after injuring his ribs in the opener.Im very confident and Im very excited to get this opportunity, Wentz said Monday.Coach Doug Pederson made the announcement two days after the Eagles traded Sam Bradford to the Vikings for a 2017 first-round pick and a 2018 conditional fourth-round pick.Everybody feels like this kid is ready to go, Pederson said. We drafted him to take on the reins. Its something now that were prepared to do. Hes such a special guy. This stage is not too big for him.The Eagles traded up twice in the draft to select Wentz second overall. They recovered some of the draft picks they lost by dealing Bradford to the desperate Vikings, who lost Teddy Bridgewater for at least the 2016 season following a severe knee injury. It was right for this football team, Pederson said of the blockbuster trade. Its something that we believe in. I believe in. This is why we drafted (Wentz). Would an ideal situation be later than sooner? Sure. But right now, where we are, weve got a good football team around him. All the pieces are here for him to be successful and us to win some games.Chase Daniel, who signed a three-year, $21 million contract in the offseason to play behind Bradford and mentor Wentz, remains the backup. If I were Chase, Id be disappointed, Pederson said. But hes the ultimate team player.Wentz said he was lying down in a cornfield hunting geese in New Jersey when Pederson called him Saturday morning to tell hes been promoted from No. 3 quarterback to starter.I feel like Ive earned respect just from how I go about my business, how I carry myself, Wentz said. Theres nothing different that Ive got to do now.dddddddddddd Its still football. Ive got to still be the same guy and just play ball, and I think those guys believe in me and Im excited for it.Wentz started just 23 games at North Dakota State where he led the Bison to FCS national championships in both of his seasons. He was 12 of 24 for 89 yards, no touchdowns and one interception in his only preseason action against Tampa Bay on Aug. 11.Now hell be under center against the team that traded down in the draft instead of staying put and selecting him.I knew I was ready, Wentz said. I felt like Ive developed at a fast pace.Rookie quarterbacks have had success in the NFL in recent years.Robert Griffin III, who will start for the Browns against the Eagles on Sunday, led the Redskins to the NFC East title in 2012. Russell Wilson led the Seahawks to 11 wins and a playoff win over RG3 that same year.Ben Roethlisberger was 13-0 as a rookie in 2004 and helped the Steelers reach the AFC championship game. Joe Flacco (2008 Ravens) and Matt Ryan (2008 Falcons) each won 11 games and went to the playoffs.Mark Sanchez guided the Jets to the AFC title game in 2009, and Andy Dalton led the Bengals to the playoffs that season. It goes to the big picture, the organization and the team, Pederson said. You play great defense and great special teams, and you have all the pieces: a good offensive line, a good running game, and you can protect guys. Thats what those guys did back early in their careers with the Roethlisbergers and the Flaccos and the Ryans and quarterbacks like that.---AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP-NFL---Follow Rob Maaddi on Twitter: https://twitter.com/AP-RobMaaddi ' ' '
