NSW Police are investigating claims of match-fixing in a third NRL game.Officers from the states Organised Crime Squad are making inquiries after the Seven Network reported an $18,000 bet was placed on Manlys round-seven loss to Parramatta earlier this season. The Organised Crime Squad is in the early stages of examining information relating to allegations of match-fixing in the NRL, a NSW Police spokeswoman told AAP.The match is the second between the two sides believed to have been investigated for fixing. The NRL confirmed in June it was reviewing Manlys losses to the Eels and South Sydney last season. The Sea Eagles lost both fixtures. They were outsiders for the clash with the Rabbitohs but short-priced favourites to beat the Eels.Controversial high-stakes punter Eddie Hayson has been linked to the match-fixing allegations but denies any involvement. The Sea Eagles have also lashed out at the allegations, the club saying in June its 70-year reputation for fair play had been unfairly tarnished by the claims.Former Sea Eagles coach Geoff Toovey told NRL360 in June he had questions after his teams poor performance against the Eels in round 24 last year.Could we be that bad? I dont think so. Maybe we could be, but possibly there was some underlying issue there, Toovey said. But I would find that incredibly hard to believe that players would sink that low. Both clubs meet again on Friday night at Pirtek Stadium. The NRL said on Friday it was continuing to cooperate with authorities over the allegations. Our position has not changed ... we will take whatever action is necessary to protect our game, a NRL spokesman said.Anyone convicted of match-fixing can expect to be banned for life but, at this stage, no one has been charged and we should avoid jumping to conclusions. The round-seven clash at Brookvale Oval was locked at 8-8 at halftime but the Eels scored three tries in the final 12 minutes to claim a 22-10 victory. The latest allegations came on the day the Eagles released a statement saying independent integrity advisor Ray Murrihy had revealed his findings after a comprehensive review of the clubs integrity framework. The Eagles said Murrihy declared that the review found no evidence of non-compliance by the MWSE with current NRL and MWSE rules, codes, schedules and agreements. With regard to further unsubstantiated claims made today, the club will continue to fully cooperate with both the NRL and NSW Police in their investigation, a club statement said. Vancouver Whitecaps and Toronto FC failed to make the postseason while Montreal Impact fell at the first hurdle losing heavily to Houston Dynamo in the Eastern Conference Knockout Round. There are plenty of reasons to write off North Melbourne but coach Brad Scott isnt counting his side out of playing an influential role in September. At times, the Kangaroos were all at sea in Saturdays loss to Hawthorn, conceding the first 46 points of the game and failing to kick a goal in the final term. The loss was their seventh-straight against top-eight opposition, the only sides that count at the end of the season. Two more await in the final two rounds - the high-flying Swans and Greater Western Sydney.Scott could be without veteran Brent Harvey for one of those weeks after the 429-game veteran caught Sam Mitchell high with a swinging arm in the 39-point defeat. There are even downsides in a bevvy of players set to prove their AFL fitness in the coming weeks.Scott is refusing to be downcast by the negatives, instead painting their remaining games as a chance to rebound.Theres some things to look forward to in terms of personnel and opportunities, he said.It helps that the Kangaroos have made preliminary finals in thhe last two seasons.ddddddddddddProbably in all but one or two years in the last five or six weve been scrambling at this point of the season, he said.On the back of a good start ... from round seven we started losing blokes each week.Theres still a real unflinching belief that our best can compete with the best. Once you get to September, who knows? The Kangaroos coach said Sam Wright, Luke McDonald, Ben Jacobs, Shaun Higgins, Kayne Turner and Jarrad Waite would all be likely to show theirBen Brown and Scott Thompson, omissions from Saturdays game, are also likely to contend for the match against Sydney in Hobart, though not guaranteed by Scott.Whether theyre right to go next week or the next couple of weeks, we;ll have to take a close look, he said. Its tough but well still have a good look at the balance of whether theyre ready (and) whether we need to take a calcuated risk with some of them.
