going to have to do the job. The running game is last in the NFL, averaging 70.3 yards. In the previous four games, New
DETROIT -- Detroits bullpen is doing everything it can to help the Tigers get into the postseason. The relievers just arent getting any help from the starting rotation. In the final three games of Detroits home series with the floundering Minnesota Twins, the starters lasted 9 1/3 innings, allowing 17 runs. Mike Pelfrey gave up four runs Thursday while getting only five outs in a 5-1 loss.I dont know how many innings our relievers threw in this series -- maybe 20 or something, Pelfrey said. We cant keep expecting those guys to pitch eight innings a night. The Tigers were able to salvage Wednesday nights game, thanks to five scoreless innings from the bullpen, but lost Tuesday and Thursday to end up with a split of the four-game series. The bullpen is doing a great job, and keeping us in games, but we cant get anything started, Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said.By going 2-2 against a team that is on pace to lose 100 games, the Tigers hurt themselves in a crowded AL wild-card race. This is obviously not what we wanted, Ausmus said. Any time you lose four out of seven, it isnt a good homestand.Hector Santiago (12-8) held Detroit to one run in 5 2/3 innings to continue his rebound after a post-trade slump.Hector had to dance out of trouble a few times, but he did a nice job, Twins manager Paul Molitor said. If he pitches like this, his spot with us next year will take care of itself. After moving from the Angels to the Twins at the trade deadline, Santiago lost his first four starts, posting a 10.89 ERA. Hes 2-0 in the last four with a 1.82 ERA.I made some adjustments when I got here, but I ended up leaving a bunch of pitches over the plate, he said. Now Im back to trying to throw good pitches, not just getting strike one.Santiago got only one groundball out and three strikeouts.I had really good command of the fastball, so I was able to keep jamming guys up and in, he said. They kept popping it up, so I kept throwing it.Pelfrey (4-10) lost in his first major league appearance since July 31. He started the game with a 60-pitch limit, but only lasted 36.The Twins took the lead in the second on Max Keplers RBI single, and he moved to third when first baseman Miguel Cabrera missed a pickoff attempt. Eduardo Escobar singled to make it 2-0, and Eddie Rosario beat out a bunt single.Juan Centeno bunted the runners over, and Pelfrey retired Byron Buxton. That brought up Brian Dozier with two on, two out and first base open. Despite his torrid numbers in the second half, Ausmus decided to pitch to him. With the bases loaded, you dont have any room to maneuver, he said. If he grounds out to third, no one is asking me about it.Instead, Dozier lined a soft single to left to give the Twins a 4-0 lead and bring Blaine Hardy out of the bullpen. Our guys were going to attack Mikes fastball, Molitor said of Pelfrey, who spent the last three seasons with the Twins. That helped us get those two early runs, and then Dozier came up with that huge hit to get the lead from two to four. The Tigers had two runners on in the third, fourth and fifth innings, but Santiago escaped all three jams without allowing a run.James McCann finally broke the shutout with a two-out RBI double in the sixth, but J.T. Chargois replaced Santiago to get out of the inning. He walked Tyler Collins, but Andrew Romine flew out to the track in right, stranding two more runners.Hardy kept the Tigers in the game with 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief and Kyle Ryan added two more, but the offense couldnt take advantage. Alex Wimmers, who came into the game with a 7.56 ERA, faced the top six in Detroits order in the seventh and eighth without trouble.Wimmers getting those six outs was huge, Molitor said. Hes had some tough luck in limited innings, but hes a reliever with four pitches and hes starting to trust his stuff.Byron Buxtons RBI single made it 5-1 in the ninth, and Brandon Kintzler finished Detroit off in the bottom of the inning.TRAINERS ROOMTwins: 3B Miguel Sano flew back to Minnesota to have more tests run on his sore back. Sano left Mondays game, and said that the problem hasnt improved. He will miss the weekend series against the Mets, but could return next week when the Twins return home.OLYMPIC WEEK CONCLUDESFor the fourth day in a row, the Tigers had a Rio Olympic medalist throw out the ceremonial first pitch. On Thursday, it was swimmer Connor Jaeger, who won silver in the 1,500-meter freestyle. Jaeger swam for Michigan.UP NEXTTwins: Travel to New York for a three-game weekend series against the Mets. Friday night, Minnesotas Jose Berrios (2-6. 9.27 ERA) faces New Yorks Bartolo Colon (13-7, 3.27).Tigers: Head to Cleveland for a three-game series and their last chance to get back into the AL Central race. Rookie of the Year favorite Michael Fulmer (10-6, 2.76 ERA) goes up against Cy Young Award candidate Corey Kluber (16-9, 3.05) in the opener.Swell Water Bottle Sale Australia .Y. - Nelson Mandela will be honoured by the New York Yankees with a plaque in Monument Park. Swell Water Bottle Australia . The Canadian squad, skipped by Jennifer Jones of Winnipeg, got on the board first with two in the second end, and followed that with two more apiece in the fourth and sixth ends. http://www.swellbottlesaleaustralia.com/swell-bottle-wood-collection/teakwood.html . Its sharpness matched my mind. This was no night to go to sleep. Swell Stockists Australia . -- Nate Robinson has played for seven teams, so beating one of them is no longer a rare occurrence. Swell Wenge Wood . Any real chance at payback wont come until the playoff. Still, Pittsburgh knows its taut 3-2 win over the Bruins on Wednesday night is a pretty good place to start laying the groundwork. "They are a very good defensive team," Penguins forward Brandon Sutter said.EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Heading into their rookie seasons as NFL head coaches, Doug Pederson of the Philadelphia Eagles and Ben McAdoo of the New York Giants knew there is a lot more to it than drawing up game plans, changing personnel and make those key late-game decisions. There is the non-football stuff, too. Both men have had to deal with that, even heading into this weeks game Sunday. The Eagles and Giants both go into the NFC East rivalry game with 4-3 records, two games behind first-place Dallas with nine games to go. The chance is there to get back to the playoffs.Of course, they have to have to play better and avoid more injuries. Then there is the other stuff.Lets start with McAdoo, the 39-year-old former offensive coordinator who got the job when Tom Coughlin left after missing the playoffs for a fourth straight year.McAdoo has had to deal with Odell Beckham Jr.s tantrums; the one-game suspension of Josh Brown in the wake of a domestic abuse charge, and later his release after the kickers prolonged history of domestic violence was disclosed; and left tackle Ereck Flowers pushing incident with a reporter after a game in Green Bay.You knew going in that there were going to be dumpster fires every day and you deal with them as they come, McAdoo said. A lot of things cross your desk that you dont want to deal with, but it is part of the job and you handle it and you move on. You stay consistent, you stay in the moment, and you keep everyones best interest in mind.Pederson has had his share of problems, the most recent the arrest of receiver Josh Huff . He was charged Tuesday with possession of a handgun without a permit and having a small amount of marijuana after he was pulled over for speeding in New Jersey.Pederson spent almost 11 minutes Wednesday answering questions about Huff and the arrest instead of talking about the game with the Giants. Huff was released on Thursday. There was also Eagles linebacker Nigel Bradham, who faces a misdemeanor concealed weapons charge after he was caught carrying a loaded gun at a Miami airport on Oct. 2.Its kind of like youre the father of your house. You just got to keep talking to . your kids and just keep reiterating the importance of who you represent, what you represent, your families, the Philadelphia Eagles, and you got to make smart choices, Pederson said. Its all about choices and consequences in life. If you make bad choices, youve got to suffer the consequences. So, well just continue to keep talking about it.The coaches also are being forced to be the face of the organization. Giants management has refused to talk to beat reporters abbout the incidents, leaving McAdoo to be the voice of the franchise, just as Pederson was this week for the Eagles.dddddddddddd.Its probably not what they expected when they decided to head into coaching.Other things to watch Sunday:SAFETY ISSUES: The Giants hoped to come out of their bye week at full health, particularly at free safety. Nat Berhe (concussion) and Darian Thompson (foot) were expected back. Berhe was still in the protocol and Thompson had a setback Wednesday. Expect former free agent Andrew Adams to make his fifth straight start.DINK AND DUNK: Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz completed 32 passes for 202 yards against Dallas, averaging 4.7 yards. Hes last in the NFL, averaging 4.97 yards per completion. The only time the Eagles threw deep against the Cowboys came when Huff caught a backward toss and fired downfield 30 yards to Jordan Matthews, who couldnt make a tough catch. They have only one offensive play for more than 30 yards in the past four games. We have to figure out and find ways to get the ball, obviously, down the field, Pederson said.LAST CARRYING THE ROCK: If the Giants offense is going to wake up, Eli Manning and the receivers are going to have to do the job. The running game is last in the NFL, averaging 70.3 yards. In the previous four games, New York has gained 78, 43, 38 and 36 yards on 70 carries. Rookie Paul Perkins may get more carries this week.COMMITTEE OF BACKS : Pederson insists Ryan Mathews is the No. 1 back and he hasnt lost confidence in him. The stats say otherwise. Darren Sproles, the 33-year-old scatback, led the Eagles with 86 yards rushing on 15 carries vs. Dallas. Mathews, who fumbled twice in the fourth quarter in the past four games, got only four carries. Rookie Wendell Smallwood had a costly fumble on his only carry in the fourth quarter. Kenjon Barner ran three times for 9 yards.TIGHT ENDS: Eagles tight ends have had career days against the Giants. Zach Ertz had nine catches for a career-high 152 yards in January. However, the Giants defense has improved this season, particularly strong safety Landon Collins. So dont be surprised if Ertz is covered. New Yorks tight end have done little. Larry Donnell fumbled early two games ago and the group has not helped much in the run game. There is always the chance New York goes extensively with four wideouts.---AP Pro Football Writer Rob Maaddi in Philadelphia contributed to this report.---For more NFL coverage: http://www.pro32.ap.org and http://www.twitter.com/AP-NFL ' ' '
