PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison feels the teams current defensive woes can be cured.Adding a former first-round pick into the mix can only help.Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said second-year linebacker Bud Dupree is in the plans for Sundays game at Cleveland. Dupree, the teams 2015 first-rounder, has spent the season on short-term injured reserve, working his way back from an injured groin. But he practiced the previous two weeks and could make his season debut Sunday.Any time you can implement a first-round talent like Bud, its always going to be a boost to the positional group and the defense overall, said Steelers linebacker Arthur Moats. From another standpoint, were all competing against each other, so to add another person that you know is going to be productive, it just makes you want to play that much harder. The Steelers placed Dupree on injured reserve during the first week of September after he underwent surgery to repair a groin injury. Dupree, who didnt play in the preseason, was designated to return and began practicing last week. Tomlin will decide whether to activate Dupree to the 53-man roster for Sundays game, which would give the Steelers a five-man rotation at outside linebacker.Everybodys interested in Bud coming back, as am I, but at the same time, we have to work with the guys who are going to play on Sunday and try to win a football game, defensive coordinator Keith Butler said. Thats primary. That has been difficult lately for the Steelers, who have lost their last four games, sliding to 4-5 overall. The defense has allowed an average of 28 points and 134 yards rushing in those losses. You want to try and stop the run, Harrison said. You dont want a team to be able to do two things well, because thats a two-headed monster and its harder to stop that. We want to try and stop the run and pressure the quarterback when we get the opportunities. The Steelers have experienced trouble pressuring the quarterback, too, with 13 sacks in nine games. Thats tied for last in the league, one season after the Steelers ranked third with 48 sacks. The run defense could be the culprit, giving the opposition third-and-short opportunities. Were not putting them into situations where they have to lean towards the pass, Harrison said. If theyre in third and manageable, it gives them an opportunity to go with (the run or pass) and you cant pin your ears back and take off after the quarterback.Harrison, the 2008 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, has made a career of getting to the quarterback. The 38-year-old Harrison, who could start at right outside linebacker Sunday, has 76 + sacks as a Steeler, a half-sack from the team record of 77 held by Jason Gildon.Harrison thought he set the record last week against Dallas, but the sack was given to Stephon Tuitt, a decision upheld after a review from the league. Harrison doesnt mind. He is more concerned with getting the Steelers back on track this week against Cleveland.Thats just the way it is, Harrison said. You just have to move on and go to the next week.Game notes WR Antonio Brown defended his decision to run out of bounds rather than lateral on the final play last Sunday against Dallas, noting it wasnt a lateral play and defenders surrounded him. They had seven guys in the end zone and four guys around me. In that scenario, you guys tell me, what would you do? Brown said. . DE Cameron Heyward (pectoral), WR Darrius Heyward-Bey (foot), S Shamarko Thomas (groin), WR Markus Wheaton (shoulder), and RB DeAngelo Williams were all ruled out for Sunday against Cleveland, while S Jordan Dangerfield (groin) and TE Xavier Grimble (quadriceps) were listed as questionable.---For more NFL coverage: http://www.pro32.ap.org and http://www.twitter.com/AP-NFLRyan Ramczyk Jersey . -- Hunter Smith scored the winner with just 12 seconds remaining in the third period as the Oshawa Generals edged the host Sarnia Sting 5-4 on Friday in Ontario Hockey League action. Now, correct me if Im wrong but I saw one official distinctly pointing at the net indicating a good goal but after an inconclusive review they overturned the goal. James Veaudry Pembroke, ON -- Hey Kerry, Youll get a lot of these, but why was the Montreal goal against Nashville Saturday night overturned? Eller puts the puck on net and the on ice ruling from the ref behind the net is a Montreal goal. Drew Brees threw a pair of touchdown passes in the first half and the guys on the other side made sure that was enough, sending the Saints to a 17-13 victory over the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday night. TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Alabama coach Nick Saban held a film session with Jalen Hurts this week to point out a few things to his young quarterback.Hurts was clearly paying attention. The freshman passed for career highs of 347 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for 100 yards in less than three quarters in No. 1 Alabamas 51-3 rout of Mississippi State on Saturday. It put on display the potential of a passing game that had lately seemed the closest thing to a weakness for the Crimson Tide. The win -- coupled with Auburns surprising loss at Georgia -- also meant Alabama clinched the SEC West title.Hurts prolific performance wiped out any concerns that the Tide (10-0, 7-0 Southeastern Conference, No. AP) would have a letdown after a bruising win at No. 19 LSU. Instead, Hurts turned in his best game and the defense denied Mississippi State (4-6, 2-4) the end zone on nine trips across midfield. Its one of the things weve been wanting to do is try to develop some confidence in the passing game, and obviously he was able to do that very well today, Saban said. He got the ball to some of our playmakers down the field and they had opportunities to make big plays.Hurts is the first Alabama player to have 300 yards passing and 100 yards rushing in the same game, and he was flirting with both those milestones by halftime. The Bulldogs had been riding high after an upset of Texas A&M, but didnt muster a threat in this one.Hurts completed 28 of 37 passes and rushed for a fifth touchdown before being replaced by Cooper Bateman late in the third quarter. The big performance was marred by an interception and fumble, but the Tides dominating defense made sure the miscues didnt matter too much.In practice, hell sling it, Alabama guard Ross Piersbacher said. Its fun to see him do that in a game. I think thats big for his confidence.ArDarius Stewart was the biggest beneficiary of the passing revival, scoring three touchdowns. Stewart gained 156 yards on eight catches, including a 67-yard sprint on a jet sweeep.ddddddddddddMississippi States Nick Fitzgerald couldnt solve Alabamas defense after two huge games. He completed 10 of 33 passes for 145 with an interception. Fitzgerald was also held to 15 rushing yards after topping 900 total yards combined against Texas A&M and Samford. We had five dropped passes in the first half, Bulldogs coach Dan Mullen said. Thats not good when youre playing a great defense. Its not good when youre playing a bad defense, but when youre playing a great defense you cannot do those things.Alabama outgained the Bulldogs 615-274 in total yards and has won nine straight meetings.THE TAKEAWAYMississippi State: The Bulldogs couldnt finish off drives, including the two started in Alabama territory, or offer a strong follow-up to last weeks upset. Fitzgerald and star receiver Fred Ross (three catches, 23 yards) were held in check.Alabama: Hurts and the Tide got the passing game going against the leagues worst pass defense. Hurts hadnt reached 200 yards passing in the previous three games, but might have emerged from this one with a shot at some Heisman Trophy votes. The defense went seven straight quarters without allowing a point.TURNING 40Saban joined Ohio States Woody Hayes and Florida States Bobby Bowden in a tie for the most wins with a top-ranked team by any coach. Hes 40-5, matching Bowden. Hayes went 40-4-1 with No. 1 teams.POLL IMPLICATIONSAlabama should hold firm as the clear leader in the playoff and AP rankings .RUNNING HURTSHurts joined Steadman Shealy in 1979 as the only Alabama quarterbacks to rush for 700-plus yards in a season. He has 735 yards, 56 shy of Shealys record.UP NEXTMississippi St.: hosts Arkansas needing to win its final two games to become bowl eligible.Alabama: hosts FCS team Chattanooga in an Iron Bowl tuneup.---More AP college football: http://collegefootball.ap.org and http://www.twitter.com/AP-Top25 ' ' '
