FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- Matt Ryan said Tuesday his focus is on his new teammates and a new season and hes not fretting about the status of his new contract. Cornerback Desmond Trufant, the Falcons first-round pick, made his off-season training activities debut Tuesday after completing his classes at the University of Washington. Ryan said Trufant made a good first impression. Ryan said another newcomer, three-time Pro Bowl running back Steven Jackson, has shown he is a leader in his first off-season with the Falcons. Predictably, Ryan said little about his contract status. General manager Thomas Dimitroff said recently he hopes to have a new deal with Ryan before the season. The quarterbacks six-year, $66 million contract expires after the 2013 season. Ryan said hes confident Dimitroff and his agent, Tom Condon, will reach an agreement. "You know what, I leave that to my agents and the front office," Ryan said. "Those guys will get that stuff done." Condon could not be reached for comment. Ryan is expected join the list of quarterbacks signing milestone long-term deals. Drew Brees, Tony Romo and Joe Flacco have recently signed five- or six-year deals worth at least $100 million. Ryan set career highs with 32 touchdown passes and 4,719 yards passing as he led the Falcons to a 13-3 record in 2012. Atlanta beat Seattle for Ryans first post-season win. The Falcons lost to San Francisco in the NFC championship game. The Falcons hopes of making another run at a Super Bowl berth were boosted by the teams addition of Jackson and the decision by tight end Tony Gonzalez to postpone his retirement plans another year. Jackson leads all active players with 10,135 yards rushing. "Steven Jackson has come in and hes a leader," Ryan said. "Hes fun to play with and fun to work with and hes a guy who really cares. I think thats been good, too. "I think for him its taken a little time to get adjusted, but when he knows what to do hes a really, really good player and hes really smart, too. Hes picked up a lot of stuff really quick. Hes dedicated. Hes one of the few guys who has called me when hes not here and picked my brain about certain stuff that were doing and I think that says a lot about him." Trufants arrival was delayed until he completed his academic work at Washington. Coach Mike Smith said another draft pick, tight end Levine Toilolo, is expected to complete his spring semester at Stanford on Tuesday and join the Falcons OTAs on Wednesday. Trufant could start as a rookie. "Hes an athletic kid, thats for sure," Ryan said. "He moves pretty well. That was the thing I noticed most of all during one-on-ones." Smith said he has given Trufant and other rookies an overload of information. "Im sure his head is spinning," Smith said. "We want to try to bombard their brains through the off-season. ... Thats always how weve done it. Lets see how they handle all of it at first and not bring them along slowly." Jackson and Trufant are important additions, but Ryan remains the face of the franchise. After five seasons he trails only Steve Bartkowski on the Falcons career lists for yards passing and touchdowns. Bartkowski threw 154 touchdown passes from 1975 to 1985. Ryan, who has 127, could pass the mark in 2013. "Certainly its great to be in the company with Bart," Ryan said. "He obviously was an awesome player in his time, probably the premier quarterback to ever play here in Atlanta. But hes also a great guy and Ive gotten to know him well and hes been very helpful to me in my career thus far. "Its great to be mentioned in that breath but at the same time its not something that you worry about or think about. For me, Im constantly focused on trying to do my job the best I can and if youre constantly worried about statistics and records and all of that it takes away from being able to do the job the best you can." NOTES: Vanderbilt coach James Franklin and his defensive assistants visited Tuesdays practice. Franklin said college and NFL schemes are not as different as in past eras so he can learn from watching the Falcons work under defensive co-ordinator Mike Nolan. ... Among veteran players not attending were Gonzalez, receiver Roddy White and cornerback Asante Samuel. ... The Falcons have mandatory minicamp on June 18-20. Smith said he expects linebackers Sean Weatherspoon and Stephen Nicholas, who have worked on the side with a trainer during OTAs while recovering from injuries, to be cleared for the minicamp. Jonjo Shelvey, a £12m signing from Swansea, had shown encouraging form against West Ham and Watford with fellow new boy Henri Saivet starting alongside him in midfield during the second of those matches. But joined in the starting line-up by another £12m signing Andros Townsend, they endured a tougher time against the Toffees. Everton 3-0 Newcastle Everton returned to form on home soil While loan signing Seydou Doumbia had to wait for his debut, remaining on the bench as an unused substitute, heres all you need to know about how the other new boys got on at Goodison Park…Jonjo ShelveyShelvey had sprayed the ball all around St James Park in his first outing in a Newcastle shirt, but after seeing the best of their new signing that day, this was a reminder of the flaws.Back on Merseyside, the midfielder was partially culpable for Aaron Lennons opening goal, failing to intercept a lofted pass forwards in the centre of the pitch that seemed within his range. Jonjo Shelvey could not produce his best form back on Merseyside He could then do nothing to stop the breakaway with Evertons movement typical of the way he was bypassed for much of the game. With Newcastle enjoying little possession, there were few opportunities for Shelvey to showcase his passing range and when they did come, he failed to impress. Shelvey struggles After fashioning four chances last time out at Watford, Jonjo Shelvey failed to create one against Everton. Shelvey is normally so assured with his passing - thats what hes in the team for, said Sky Sports pundit Andy Hinchcliffe. But three or four times he gave the ball away very cheaply.Henri SaivetThe 25-year-old Senegal international had a key role in midfield sweeping up behind Shelvey and there were signs of his capabilities in the early stages. Henri Saivet provided some bit in midfield for Newcastle before being withdrawn Saivet won possession of the ball more times than any other player on the pitch in the opening 45 minutes, also making more interceptions than the rest of his Newcastle team-mates.Hes made a very good start, said Hinchcliffe on co-commentary. That defensive work is so important. However, he soon appeared rattled once the goal went in. Ball winner Henri Saivet won possession more times (8) than any other Newcastle player, despite being substituted after 55 minutes. One miscontrol allowed the ball to run under his foot and too often Saivet gave possession of the ball away cheaply, causing pressure to build. He was withdrawn 10 minutes after the break.Andros TownsendPoor final ball from Andros Townsend. Hinchcliffes words came at the end of a fine driving run of purpose and power in the early stages, but the conclusion was all too familiar. Andros Townsend struggled to make an impression on his Newcastle debut There was plenty of optimism and endeavour to Townnsends performance and the fact that he made more sprints than any of his Newcastle team-mates is to his credit given the lack of first-team action.dddddddddddd Townsend delivery Andros Townsend completed none of his crosses against Everton. But for all his work, defensively and offensively, the fact that Townsend failed to complete any of his crosses, whether on the right or left, will be a concern. Steve McClaren says Newcastles performance against Everton was unacceptable Indeed, Steve McClaren might well be more concerned by the problems at left-back, while his centre-backs struggled to deal with the threat posed by Arouna Kone and Ross Barkley. The likes of Shelvey and Townsend are solid players and they will give the team something going forwards, concluded Hinchcliffe.
