RIO DE JANEIRO -- Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti acknowledged Saturday that the results of Novembers U.S. presidential election could weigh heavily on his citys chances of hosting the 2024 Olympics, saying that a victory by Donald Trump could turn off International Olympic Committee voters.Garcetti also told The Associated Press that Los Angeles could offer the last best hope for the United States to host the Summer Olympics again before the American people begin tuning out from the Games.Garcetti, a 45-year-old Democrat and supporter of Hillary Clinton, is in Brazil to observe the Rio de Janeiro Games and pitch his citys bid to IOC members. One of the main topics of conversation with the delegates has been the U.S. election -- and the prospects of a Trump presidency.I think for some of the IOC members, they would say, Wait a second, can we go to a country like that, where weve heard things that we take offense to? Garcetti said. But I think that gives us even more urgency globally, where we can say, This is something that is a different strength maybe than the things that youve heard or the things you believe. I think we continue no matter what the outcome of the election is.A new U.S. president will be in office when the IOC selects the 2024 host city in September 2017.Los Angeles, which hosted the Olympics in 1932 and 1984, is competing with Paris, Rome and Budapest, Hungary.Everything that were going through right now in the United States politically, I dont want us to be a country that turns into itself, said Garcetti, who spoke at the Democratic convention in Philadelphia last month. I think we have to look outward to the world. The IOCs 98 members come from all over the world, and Trumps comments on Mexicans, Muslims and other issues wont encourage them to vote for a U.S. city, according to Garcetti. They wonder, Is America going to take this strange turn? Garcetti said. Were there to be an election result that is less international, more inward focused, maybe theres even greater urgency to a bid like this.Garcetti adde: But even if that doesnt happen, even the threat of that, the talk of that, the idea that we exclude people based on who they are at our borders, gives us urgency to having things like the Olympics underscore who we are and what were about.Los Angeles bid chairman Casey Wasserman said the city will continue to push the bid on its own technical merits.I dont think you can judge a country by who runs for president, he said. I think you should judge a country on who is the president and their beliefs and their policies. And clearly thats something the members will take into account. But thats something I cant control.Los Angeles is seeking to bring the Summer Olympics back to the U.S. for the first time since Atlanta hosted the 1996 Games. The bid follows failed attempts by New York and Chicago for the 2012 and 2016 Olympics, respectively.I dont know if this is the last best hope, but I do think that after a few bids, after a while, there will be real feeling of people tuning out in America, a new generation that isnt connected with the legacy sports, said Garcetti, who attended Rios opening ceremony on Friday night, 32 years after going to the close of the 84 Games as a 13-year-old.Recent American bids have suffered from anti-U.S. sentiment among some members in the European-dominated IOC, and Garcetti said he is working to change that. There may be a general anti-Americanism, but once you create a relationship with somebody, it becomes a relationship with Eric and that person, he said. As we get to know each other over time, they realize you cant slap a title, just like American and a caricature of what that means on anybody.I want to listen, Garcetti said. I dont want to just come in and say, Were the Americans, we get the most medals, we bring in the sponsorships. That turns people off.He acknowledged there could be a backlash among some IOC members to what they consider U.S. meddling in global sports affairs, including the Justice Department investigation of world soccer body FIFA and the U.S. Anti-Doping Agencys call for a total ban on Russias Olympic team over state-sponsored doping.Ive been very careful to say, Look, what prosecutors or anti-doping officials do, at least in our country, is completely separate from what a mayor or a city government is about. Schaub was 8 of 11 for 92 yards and a touchdown and the Texans got a 24-17 win over the Dolphins. Schaub played most of the first quarter for Houston (2-0) and got off to a rough start, throwing an interception on his first series and being sacked on third down on the second. He and the offence got going on the next drive, and he found tight end Owen Daniels wide open in the end zone for a 15-yard touchdown play to put Houston up 7-0. Case Keenum took over after that and was 11 of 18 for 150 yards with a 38-yard touchdown pass. T.J. Yates finished the game, and was seven of nine for 84 yards including a 33-yard touchdown throw to Garrett Graham in the third quarter. The solid performance by both players didnt bring any clarity in the battle to backup Schaub. Coach Gary Kubiak said he isnt closer to a decision and hell continue to evaluate the pair in the upcoming week. "TJs solid again, Case makes some really nice throws in there," Kubiak said. "The easy way for me to answer that is to say theyre both doing their jobs. Theyre making it really hard on me, and thats a good thing for our team." Ryan Tannehill looked sharp, completing 10 of 15 passes for 141 yards and a touchdown in just under a half of work for the Dolphins (1-2). "I dont think we played as clean as have to," coach Joe Philbin said. "Offensively, it took us a while to get going. We did some good things, but theres a lot of room for improvement." Tannehill wanted to use this game to develop chemistry with Wallace, who joined the Dolphins in the off-season after four years in Pittsburgh. He did that, connecting with Wallace three times for 58 yards, including a nine-yard touchdown pass that tied it at 7 in the first quarter. "It was great for us," Tannehill said. "I think our relationship continues to grow; we continue to be more on the same page the more reps we can practice. It was exciting to get a couple of balls to him and hopefully get his ball rolling." But the offence took a blow when new tight end Dustin Keller sustained what appeared to be a serious right knee injury. Kellers leg bent unnaturally when he was tackled on the rigght knee by D.ddddddddddddJ. Swearinger on an incomplete pass Saturday night. He immediately grabbed his right knee and was soon carted off the field. Philbin said he didnt have a diagnosis on Kellers injury, but Wallace was preparing for the worst. "It looked pretty bad, and Im pretty sure hes going to be out for a while," Wallace said, adding that he hadnt heard anything official on Kellers status. Houston first-round pick receiver DeAndre Hopkins was also injured; leaving in the second quarter with a concussion. Hopkins, the 27th overall pick this year out of Clemson, had two receptions for 22 yards before the injury. Kubiak said he wasnt sure how Hopkins was injured, but saw him looking disoriented on the field. "He didnt run the route, didnt get his depth, was just stumbling all over the place," Kubiak said. "So we got him out. Andre Johnson saw his first action of the preseason and had one reception for 20 yards. Texans star linebacker Brian Cushing returned on Saturday for the first time since a knee injury ended his season in Week 5 last season and played 10 snaps. He had a tackle and came close to a sacking Tannehill, lunging at him and grabbing his midsection before the quarterback wriggled away on Cushings final play. "Im proud of him," Kubiak said. "For him to go out there and get hit on and stuff like that was a big step." J.J. Watt, last years defensive player of the year, saw limited action after sitting out in Houstons first preseason game. Houston defensive end Antonio Smith had a good night, finishing with a sack and a tackle for a loss. Daniel Thomas took a short pass from Tannehill and turned it into a 27-yard gain that got Miami down to the 4-yard line in the second quarter. A 4-yard run by Lamar Miller two plays later tied it at 14-14. Houstons Randy Bullock, who missed all of last season with a groin injury, gave Houston a 17-14 lead just before halftime with a 46-yard field goal.
