NFL Nation reporters detail the biggest storylines to come out of Week 1 -- and what they mean going forward -- for every team.NFC East | NFC North | NFC South | NFC West AFC East | AFC North| AFC South | AFC WestNFC EASTDallas CowboysRoger Staubach remains the only rookie quarterback to start and win a season opener for the Cowboys. Like Troy Aikman and Quincy Carter before him, Dak Prescott was not able to grab a win, but there were some positives in what he was able to get done. Mostly, he didnt turn the ball over. He missed a chance for two touchdowns with a Cole Beasley drop and a Dez Bryant score overturned by replay. Prescott knew since Aug. 25 he would start the opener. Now the preparation for Week 2 starts quickly. Prescott said he would look at the game again on Sunday night and once more on Monday and then move on to the Redskins on Tuesday. -- Todd ArcherNext game:?at Redskins, Sunday, 1 p.m. ETNew York GiantsAfter the way the Giants collapsed last season in the opener -- and after the way they blew so many leads late -- their victory over the Cowboys on Sunday was more than just a normal win. As quarterback Eli Manning said: Just to know we can win the tight ones is helpful. They also have Victor Cruz back. Cruz made his long-awaited return and scored the game-winning touchdown in the fourth quarter. Things are looking up for coach Ben McAdoos Giants. -- Jordan RaananNext game:?vs. Saints, Sunday, 1 p.m. ETPhiladelphia EaglesRookie quarterback Carson Wentz opened some eyes with a strong debut, showing plenty of poise and finishing 22-of-37 for 278 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions in the Eagles win over the Browns. I wasnt really nervous. I really dont get nervous, Wentz said after the game. The Browns arent considered a very good team, but that wont stop the Wentz hype from running wild in Philadelphia. -- Tim McManusNext game:?at Bears, Monday, 8:30 p.m. ET, ESPNWashington RedskinsA big question entering the Monday night game will be how Matt Jones handles being the No. 1 running back. The coaches said Jones path on his carries improved in the offseason and preseason and he also showed an ability to be more decisive. But the Redskins want him to run with more power at the end of his runs; he has admitted that he sometimes stutter-steps too much and loses power. One aspect that will help Jones: blocking from tight ends. It should be much improved over last season, and that will help the line and Jones in the run game. -- John KeimNext game:?vs. Cowboys, Sunday, 1 p.m. ETNFC NORTHChicago BearsWide receiver Kevin White said he need to watch the tape to explain what happened on Jay Cutlers costly third-quarter interception when the quarterback expected White to break a route outside. White instead stayed put, and the Texans picked off Cutlers errant pass, a play that altered Sundays?game, which Chicago ended up losing. White has endured a difficult stretch. The seventh overall choice of the 2015 NFL draft, White sat out all of last season, had a quiet preseason until the exhibition finale and injured a hamstring in practice that hurt his preparation for the game with the Texans. The Bears need White to bounce back, and in a big way. Cutler has chemistry with Alshon Jeffery and Eddie Royal, but the quarterback and White are still trying to get on the same page. -- Jeff DickersonNext game:?vs. Eagles, Monday, 8:30 p.m. ET, ESPNDetroit LionsQuarterback?Matthew Stafford did it again with a new-look offense and no Calvin Johnson. He led the Lions to a last-minute win over the Colts with an offense focused on short passes to create space for his playmakers to beat defenders. And conceptually, thats exactly how the Lions wanted it to work. -- Michael RothsteinNext game:?vs. Titans, Sunday, 1 p.m. ETGreen Bay PackersWide receiver?Jordy Nelsons return was a success on several levels: He got through Sundays win over the Jaguars without any complications from last years knee injury; he caught his first touchdown pass in 21 months; and the Packers were able to go deep -- even if it was to other players. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers completed three passes that traveled?at least 20 yards down the field. Last year without Nelson, Rodgers didnt have three such completions in a game until Week 9, according to ESPN Stats & Information. -- Rob DemovskyNext game: at Vikings, Sunday, 8:30 p.m. ETMinnesota VikingsCoach Mike Zimmer said the Vikings will decide on their starting quarterback on a week-to-week basis, and much of the attention this week figures to be on whether Sam Bradford is ready to take over the top job from Shaun Hill. Hill threw for 236 yards in the Vikings win over the Titans on Sunday, but after the Vikings traded a first-round pick and a conditional 2018 fourth-rounder for Bradford, their plan was to make Bradford the starter before too long. Bradford could make his Vikings debut on Sunday night against the Packers. -- Ben GoesslingNext game:?vs. Packers, Sunday, 8:30 p.m. ETNFC SOUTHAtlanta FalconsThe Falcons still cant score in the red zone, still have issues tackling and still cant sack the quarterback. They went 1-for-4 in the red zone in Sundays loss to the Buccaneers, failed to tackle Tampa Bay running back Charles Sims on a key touchdown before halftime and didnt sack Jameis Winston as he?threw four touchdown passes. Those are areas the Falcons sorely need to correct -- along with pre-snap penalties -- if they hope to win at Oakland next week. -- Vaughn McClureNext game:?at Raiders, Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ETCarolina PanthersThe NFL and NFLPA are looking into whether the Carolina team physician and independent physician responded appropriately in terms of the concussion protocol after quarterback Cam Newton received the last of four helmet-to-helmet hits in Thursdays NFL opener in Denver. But the bigger concern for Carolina has to be the accumulation of hits Newton has taken over his first five seasons and one game, and whether the game plan needs to be adjusted so the 2015 NFL MVP takes fewer hits. Newton was hit 17 times against the Broncos while rushing or passing. Thats the second most of his career in a single game. -- David NewtonNext game:?vs. 49ers, Sunday, 1 p.m. ETNew Orleans SaintsThe Saints looked awfully familiar in Week 1 -- with quarterback?Drew Brees 423 yards and four touchdown?passes not being enough to secure a victory against the Raiders. Their young defense will have better days, but it will have a lot of bad ones like this too -- especially with the news that top cornerback?Delvin Breaux appears to have suffered a broken fibula. Thats never good, but it really hurts when you look up and see Odell Beckham Jr. coming up next on the schedule. -- Mike TriplettNext game: at Giants, Sunday, 1 p.m. ETTampa Bay BuccaneersBucs quarterback Jameis Winston threw four touchdown passes in the win over the Falcons, atoning for a first-quarter interception. We just turned the page ... thats how we are, Winston said. When were clicking, were a hard team to stop. Coach [Dirk] Koetter kept pressing and pressing and let us do what we do. A big reason they started clicking? When they ran the no-huddle just before the end of the first half. -- Jenna LaineNext game:?at Cardinals, Sunday, 4:05 p.m. ETNFC WESTArizona CardinalsThe Cardinals improved their defense by trading with the Patriots for one of the NFLs best young pass-rushers, outside linebacker Chandler Jones. Against his former team, against a backup quarterback, Jones and the Cardinals were supposed to show how much better theyd become. Instead, they gave up 23 points to the Jimmy Garoppolo-led Patriots in a loss. -- Josh WeinfussNext game:?vs. Buccaneers, Sunday, 4:05 p.m. ETLos Angeles RamsJared Goff, the No. 1 overall pick who is expected to someday be the face of the Rams franchise, will not dress for the Monday Night Football opener. And itll come against a 49ers team he grew up rooting for, in a San Francisco Bay Area stadium located roughly 60 miles from where he?grew up. The Cal product took his lumps in the preseason, completing 22 of 49 passes, while committing four turnovers, and he didnt do nearly enough to beat out Case Keenum, who led the Rams to wins in three of their final four games last season. -- Alden GonzalezNext game: vs. Seahawks, Sunday, 4:05 p.m. ETSan Francisco 49ersThe Chip Kelly era in San Francisco is set to begin under the bright lights of Monday Night Football. The shape Kellys offense takes will be fascinating, as hes expected to push the pace to try to spark an offense that was one of the two worst in the league a season ago. Much will be made of what happens during the national anthem, but Kellys effect on the offense and how that group fares in the new scheme will determine how the Kelly regime begins. -- Nick WagonerNext game: at Panthers, Sunday, 1 p.m. ETSeattle SeahawksIt was not a pretty performance, but Russell Wilson engineered a 14-play, 75-yard drive down the stretch to give the Seahawks the victory over the Dolphins. In the third quarter, Wilson was sacked by Ndamukong Suh and suffered an ankle injury. He didnt miss any snaps and said hell be ready to go for next week. But whether Wilson is 100 percent is another story. Were going to look at it, Pete Carroll said. He got in a bad situation there, the way he got kicked. -- Sheil KapadiaNext game:?at Rams, Sunday, 4:05 p.m. ETAFC EASTBuffalo BillsThe Bills offense was a major disappointment in Sundays loss to the Ravens, and the availability of starting left tackle Cordy Glenn is now in question when Buffalo hosts the Jets on Thursday night. Glenn injured his ankle in the second quarter on Sunday and never returned; he was replaced by Cyrus Kouandjio, who was part of an offensive line that allowed Tyrod Taylor to be pressured by Baltimore. -- Mike RodakNext game:?vs. Jets, Thursday, 8:25 p.m. ETMiami DolphinsThe Dolphins leave Seattle disappointed after their close?loss, but they also found out they are probably better than many people?expected. Miamis locker room was quietly confident that this can be a good season. The team just has to clean up early mistakes. -- James WalkerNext game:?at Patriots, Sunday, 1 p.m. ETNew England PatriotsQuarterback Jimmy Garoppolo delivered an impressive performance in his first career regular-season start, finishing 24 of 33 for 264 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions as he played with poise and rose up in the fourth quarter with some of his best work. Specifically, his third-and-15 throw to Danny Amendola, in which he initially kept the play alive with his feet before spotting Amendola down the field, was clutch. That play was part of setting up the field goal that put the Patriots ahead 23-21, which was ultimately the final score. -- Mike ReissNext game:?vs. Dolphins,?Sunday, 1 p.m. ETNew York JetsThe Jets secondary -- Darrelle Revis, in particular -- was poor against the Bengals. There were mental mistakes and busted coverages, resulting in a 366-yard passing day by Bengals quarterback?Andy Dalton -- and they have only three days to clean it up. The Jets travel to play?the Bills on Thursday, and Revis will face Sammy Watkins, who torched New York in Week 17 last season with 11 catches for 136 yards. -- Rich CiminiNext game:?at Bills, Thursday, 8:25 p.m. ETAFC NORTHBaltimore RavensJust like the old days, the Ravens defense carried the team to victory. Playing surprisingly faster than Tyrod Taylor and LeSean McCoy, the Ravens held Buffalo to 160 yards of total offense -- the fewest Baltimore has allowed in five years. The Ravens sealed the win by not allowing a first down in the fourth quarter. The difference was in the secondary, where Shareece Wright (11 tackles) was the Ravens best defender, and Eric Weddle and Lardarius Webb upgraded the safety position. Today was a glimpse of what we can become, Weddle said. -- Jamison HensleyNext game: at Browns, Sunday, 1 p.m. ETCincinnati BengalsThe Bengals had questions about their receiver group after the departures of Mohamed Sanu and Marvin Jones, but A.J. Green and Brandon LaFell combined for 271 receiving yards against the Jets and proved that the Bengals offense is still a force to be reckoned with. The Bengals, however, gave up?seven sacks, and the lack of running game -- they averaged just 3.0 yards per carry -- is a concern as they head into Week 2 against the Steelers. -- Katherine TerrellNext game:?at Steelers, Sunday, 1 p.m. ETCleveland BrownsMore tests will be conducted this week on the left shoulder injury of Robert Griffin III, who said he had a sprained shoulder resulting from a late hit in the Browns season-opening loss to the Eagles. The Cleveland quarterback was 12-of-26 passing for 190 yards with no touchdowns and one interceptions against Philadelphia, and he was outplayed by the rookie signal-caller?that the Browns could have drafted. -- Pat McManamonNext game: vs. Ravens, Sunday, 1 p.m. ETPittsburgh SteelersThe Steelers have arrived in Maryland for Monday Night Football, and they brought four active receivers with them. One is Antonio Brown, and the others combined for 22 catches last season. The loss of Markus Wheaton?(shoulder) leaves the Steelers thin at receiver, but young options Sammie Coates and Eli Rogers are eager to fill the void. Darrius Heyward-Bey will likely start the matchup with the Redskins as the No. 2 receiver. -- Jeremy FowlerNext game:?vs. Bengals, Sunday, 1 p.m. ETAFC SOUTHHouston TexansOffseason additions on offense -- quarterback Brock Osweiler, running back Lamar Miller and receiver Will Fuller -- showed on Sunday what the Texans were going for when they retooled their offense after last season. The Texans had eight different players catch a pass, and coach Bill OBrien said he thought Osweiler had poise during the game and ran the offense well. The Texans split passes and rushing attempts evenly, which is something they hope they can continue this season for a well-balanced offense. -- Sarah BarshopNext game:?vs. Chiefs, Sunday, 1 p.m. ETIndianapolis ColtsA slow start ruined quarterback Andrew Lucks return on Sunday. Luck threw for 385 yards, four touchdowns and didnt commit a turnover, but the Colts didnt have enough to pull off the victory after falling behind 21-3. Tired of talking about slow starts and tired of being a part of slow starts, Luck said. Disappointed in myself for being a part of a slow start. -- Mike WellsNext game:?at Broncos, Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ETJacksonville JaguarsThe Jaguars pass rush had a frustrating day against Packers quarterback?Aaron Rodgers, getting to him only once. Rodgers was able to evade the rush and made several big plays while out of the pocket, which was something the team had devised a game plan for all week. There wasnt much pressure off the edge from Dante Fowler Jr.?or?Yannick Ngakoue, and that will be an issue this week in San Diego against Philip Rivers. Rivers has destroyed the Jaguars in six career games, throwing for 1,899 yards and 15 touchdown passes, with only four interceptions. Rivers has 677 yards and seven touchdowns, with no interceptions, in his past two games against the Jaguars. -- Mike DiRoccoNext game:?at Chargers, Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ETTennessee TitansTwo offensive stars made the gaffes that killed the Titans?on opening day. Quarterback Marcus Mariotas interception turned into a 77-yard interception return, and he and running back DeMarco Murray combined to botch a handoff that resulted in a 24-yard fumble return for a score. Murray had a fumble of his own. The two will need to play far cleaner in order for the Titans to get better results. They wont beat good teams with three giveaways. -- Paul KuharskyNext game:?at Lions, Sunday, 1 p.m. ETAFC WESTDenver BroncosThe Broncos depth at wide receiver is already being tested. Bennie Fowler, who had been the teams solid No. 3 in training camp, did not play in the season opener because he is still recovering from a fracture near his right elbow.?Demaryius Thomas suffered a hip injury in the win over Carolina that could force him to miss some time. Thomas is being sent for a second opinion on the injury.?Thomas briefly left the game before halftime but did return, though he looked to be laboring at times. If he misses some time, the Broncos will have to adjust how they do things. Emmanuel Sanders will be asked to do more, even as he gets more attention from opposing defenses, and Cody Latimer will have to find a way to get himself more involved in the offense. -- Jeff LegwoldNext game:?vs. Colts, Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ETKansas City ChiefsThe locker room was immediately subdued after Sundays game against the?Chargers, particularly for a team that had had just completed a dramatic comeback. Finally, quarterback Alex Smith, who had been delayed on the field doing a TV interview, entered the room. Only then did the place erupt. Smith was the man of the moment after leading the Chiefs to 30 points in the final 23 minutes and scoring the winning touchdown in overtime of a game that earlier looked lost. Smith might be the man for some time in the Chiefs locker room. The Chiefs had looked to Smith before during his three seasons as their quarterback for that late-game spark, but despite numerous attempts, they had never won a game with a late touchdown. Smith smashed through that barrier on Sunday, guiding the Chiefs to the tying touchdown with 1:03 left in the fourth quarter. Smith scored the game winner himself, on a play he called himself. His two-yard option run just more than five minutes into overtime secured his place among his teammates. -- Adam TeicherNext game:?at Chiefs, Sunday, 1 p.m. ETOakland RaidersThe Raiders were not about to call coach Jack Del Rios decision to go for a two-point conversion with 47 seconds to play and trailing by one point gutsy in the aftermath of the conversion and a white-knuckle victory in New Orleans. Rather, it was a call built on trust, players said after Derek Carrs fade pass to Michael Crabtree was hauled in for the game winner. It just gives us so much confidence to have him do that for us, Carr said of Del Rio. -- Paul GutierrezNext game:?vs. Falcons, Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ETSan Diego ChargersThe Chargers lost their best receiver for perhaps the season when Keenan Allen suffered a right knee injury. Allen had to be taken off of the field in a cart and will have an MRI on Monday. Chargers coach Mike McCoy acknowledged speculation that Allen could have suffered an ACL injury, but the team will wait for further tests to confirm those reports. Without Allen, the Chargers will rely on a collective approach to replace that lost production. -- Eric D.
